Some locations for a photoshoot just make sense. Not just because they photograph well (though Treman Park absolutely does), but because they mean something to you as a couple.

For Kayla and Sara, Ithaca was where their relationship actually started. The trails, the gorges, the general feeling of that place - it was theirs before it was the backdrop for this wonderful engagement session.

So when it came time to do their engagement session, coming back to Ithaca wasn't just a logistical decision. It was the obvious one.

Why Treman Park Works Wonderfully for Engagement Photos

Robert H. Treman State Park sits in the hills just south of Ithaca, and if you've never been, the short version is this: layered gorge trails, old-growth forest, and Lucifer Falls - a 115-foot cascading waterfall that somehow never gets old to photograph in front of.

The longer version is that it's one of those locations that gives you a lot to work with across a single session. You can start in the forest along the creek where the light comes through the canopy in a soft, filtered way. Move deeper into the gorge and the stone walls and rushing water create natural framing that you don't have to manufacture. And then when you reach Lucifer Falls, you've got something genuinely dramatic to anchor the final frames of the session.

It's also, on a good day, surprisingly uncrowded for how beautiful it is. Many of the more popular destinations in this area require little to no walking to get to the payoff of a beautiful waterfall or gorge. This one does require a bit more effort - but the results are worth it! We got lucky - the park cleared out early, which meant most of the session felt like we had the trail almost entirely to ourselves.

You Want A Photo Session That Feels Like You

Kayla and Sara are delightfully easy to be around! There wasn't a lot of convincing needed to get them comfortable expressing their love for each other - they were already there. That playful ease you see in the photos isn't something I directed. It's just how they are naturally with each other.

We moved through the park without rushing. Hit the creek walk section first, worked our way down into the gorge, and by the time we reached the falls the light had shifted in the best possible way. A little overcast. That even, soft diffusion that makes colors pop on film without any harsh shadows. The bouquet Sara was carrying - all those yellows and reds and purples — looked incredible against the falls in that light.

Then it started to rain.

Not a sprinkle, a straight-up downpour. Enough to call it - as we ran back towards the parking lot. Honestly, the timing worked out. The overcast that came with it was exactly what you want when you're shooting against moving water. Everything settled into this quiet, muted quality that let them stand out in front of it.

What I Shoot at a Location Like This

Treman is a mixed-light environment. You're moving between deep shade, dappled forest light, open sky near the falls, and everything in between. My approach at a location like this is to stay flexible and read what each section of the trail is giving me rather than arriving with a fixed plan.

For Kayla and Sara's session I shot digitally, which gave me the latitude to respond quickly as conditions shifted — especially once the clouds rolled in. The goal is always to come home with images that feel consistent across different light conditions, not technically perfect in one and flat in another.

Why I Keep Coming Back to The Finger Lakes

I grew up in Ithaca. Treman was one of THE summer spots, alongside the other parks and trails in Taughannock and Buttermilk - long before I ever brought a camera there. I know the trails, I know how the light moves through the gorge at different times of year, and I know what it feels like to have that place become part of how you understand yourself.

Kayla and Sara went to Ithaca College. So did I. That shared history made the first conversation easy - we weren't talking about just a scenic location, we were talking about somewhere all three of us already knew. When clients have that kind of relationship with a place, it shows up in the photos. They're not performing a backdrop. They actually belong there.

The Finger Lakes is somewhere I'm always looking for an excuse to shoot. If you're thinking about an engagement session in Ithaca, Watkins Glen, Seneca Lake, or anywhere else in the region.

Thinking About Treman for Your Own Engagement Session?

A few things worth knowing before you go:

**Timing.** Early morning on a weekday is your best bet for avoiding crowds. Late afternoon light near the falls is beautiful in spring and fall. Midsummer weekends can be VERY busy. We got very lucky on this May Saturday.

**Footwear.** The gorge trail is uneven stone. If you want to get close to the water or go deep into the gorge, wear real shoes. I'll always tell you this ahead of time and factor it into outfit conversations. Functional shoes are your friend - but something that photographs nicely.

**Weather.** A little overcast is genuinely great for photography at this location. Don't panic if clouds roll in. Some of the best frames from this session came right after it started to rain.
