Creating timeless couple portraits isn’t just about taking nice photos - it’s about capturing a feeling. A real sense of connection, comfort, and meaning. The best couple photos don’t just look good; they hold up for years because they reflect something true. I love to capture planned surprise and delight moments like proposals and elopements - but engagement and family shoots can have a ton of added emotion - with the right planning.

What Makes a Couple Portrait Memorable?

It’s not just the poses or the editing - it’s the story behind the image. Whether it’s laughter, intimacy, or quiet presence, a great couple portrait gives a glimpse into what makes that particular relationship unique. This is something I always aim for when I shoot.

Planning with Intention

Start with location. Choose somewhere that already means something to you - a favorite neighborhood walk, your first date spot, or even just your home. Familiar places help people relax, which translates beautifully on camera.

Lighting is everything. Golden hour (right after sunrise or before sunset) adds softness and warmth. If you want portraits that feel cinematic and timeless, that’s the window.

What to Wear (and What Not To)

The goal isn’t to match - it’s to complement. Stick to soft, neutral tones or simple patterns that don’t distract from what matters: you. Comfort > trend. If you feel good, you’ll look good.

Posing That Feels Natural

No stiff poses here. I usually start with movement - walking, turning, laughing, leaning. The in-between moments are where the good stuff lives. I also love capturing people doing something together they love - cooking, slow dancing, joking around.

Emotional Connection > Perfect Shot

The real magic happens when couples forget about the camera. I encourage people to talk to each other, tell a funny memory, or just be quiet for a second and be present. That authenticity always shows through.

Editing with a Light Touch

Post-processing should elevate, not mask. I aim to keep the colors true and natural, enhancing light and tone while keeping the mood honest. Black-and-white edits can also lend a timeless feel, especially for quieter, more emotional frames.

Why It’s Worth Doing

Having professional couple portraits is about more than social media posts. It’s about freezing a chapter of your life together. Whether it's an engagement, an anniversary, or just a normal weekend that felt special, it matters. And it deserves to be documented with care.

If you’re looking for couple portraits in Rochester, Buffalo, or the Finger Lakes, let’s talk. I work with couples who want photos that feel grounded, cinematic, and totally them.

Creating an emotional connection is key to great photos.
