Canandaigua Lake is one of the most consistently beautiful places to do an engagement session in the Finger Lakes region. The water, the surrounding hills, the light that comes off the lake in every season - it photographs well almost regardless of conditions. Compared to Watkins Glen or Letchworth, it's easily accessible, no permit required, and about 45 minutes from Rochester.
Athina and Jeffrey's session is a good example of what a Canandaigua engagement session looks like when everything comes together. They were also expecting, which added a beautiful layer of emotion to the day.
Where to shoot at Canandaigua Lake
The waterfront has more range than most people realize. These are the three spots I go back to most for engagement work:
Best for privacy: Lagoon Park
Willow trees along the shore, quieter than the main pier, strong lake views without the foot traffic. This is the spot if you want to feel like you have the lake to yourselves. Parking is available nearby - and you'll be shielded a bit from the city and metro backdrop. Canandaigua, NY 14424.
Best overall: Kershaw Park
The go-to for a reason. Wide open lawn leading down to the lake, a gazebo that works well for portraits, and enough open space to move through multiple looks in one session. Easy parking, right on the water. 1 Lakeshore Dr, Canandaigua, NY 14424.
Best for iconic Canandaigua scenery: Canandaigua City Pier
The classic colored boathouses, open water views, and that unmistakably Finger Lakes feel. This beautiful spot sits at a corner of the lake that both morning and evening light would make a perfect addition to your shoot. There are more people moving through, but the backdrop earns it. 10 Lakeshore Dr, Canandaigua, NY 14424.
Best for afternoon light: Deep Run Beach
East side of the lake, residential and quiet. When the water is calm and the light comes in low, this stretch is as good as anything in the Finger Lakes for engagement photography.
Athina and Jeffrey's session moved between a couple of these spots. The variety is part of what makes Canandaigua work - you're not locked into one look for the full session. Easily walk between a few, or jump in the car for a quick change of scenery.
Why overcast days are better than you might think for photos...
Their session fell on one of those days that would have made a lot of photographers nervous. Prom season. Cloud cover. A little chill still in the air. The waterfront had a bit of chaotic energy everywhere - families, teenagers in formal wear staking out every obvious spot along the lake. A lot of times I'll get questions about whether the weather is going to be a major factor for our shoot, and if we should reschedule. 9 times out of 10 - I would say no, unless you have a very specific look in mind.
Overcast skies produce soft, diffused light with no harsh shadows cutting across faces and no blown highlights competing with the subject. On Kodak Portra 400, that kind of light reads as warmth - and the film's color response on a gray afternoon has a softness that's genuinely hard to replicate in digital without it looking overly processed. I will always take a beautiful overcast day in the Finger Lakes over a cloudless sky -- and this day was a clear picture of why.
I shoot every session on a hybrid kit 0- real Kodak Portra 400 alongside Fujifilm digital. On an overcast day, Fujifilm's color science does something specific: clean, cool, honest tones that don't fight the light. Together the two systems produce a gallery that feels cohesive but not uniform. Some frames have the grain and warmth of real film - which is why I love using this camera as a complement to my film setup.
Nostalgia Nomad Photography serves couples in Rochester, the Finger Lakes, and New York City. Engagement sessions start at $400 and include both digital and real film frames. If you're planning a session at Canandaigua Lake or anywhere in the Finger Lakes, I'd love to hear about it.
